November 9th was a day of redemption for the JHS girls volleyball team. It was the Division three volleyball finals, Johnston vs. Portsmouth. The team was returning to the finals after last years crushing loss to Central High School.
The Lady Panthers had completed an undefeated season, winning every match including the one against Portsmouth earlier in the season. The team that won three out of the possible five matches would be the champions. We started off strong with two wins but Portsmouth put up a fight and won the third and fourth matches. It all came down to the fifth match, a situation the girls were all too familiar with. But, with a combination of consistent serves and defensive hitting, the Lady Panthers stopped Portsmouth dead in their tracks. Johnston won the state girls volleyball championship.
