After School Clubs and Activities

Learning doesn't end when the final bell rings. Johnston Senior High School offers a wide variety of clubs, organizations, and activities that allow students to explore their interests, develop new skills, build lasting friendships, and become active members of our school community. Whether you're looking to serve others, compete, create, lead, or simply try something new, there's a place for you at JHS. We encourage every student to get involved, discover their passions, and make the most of their high school experience.

  • A yearlong activity preparing for the culminating event with the statewide competition in March.


    Each year the USAD selects a Topic/Theme for students to study within the framework of ten events. Subjects are: Social Studies, Science, Art, Music, Math, Economics Literature, Speech, Interview and Essay. Students meet twice a week to study the Topic/Theme.

  • Open to all students who are fascinated by the many ways that chemistry connects to their world. Supported by the American Chemical Society, ChemClub provides fun, authentic and hands-on oppotrunties to experience chemsitry beyond what is taught in the classroom, learn about career opportunties/scholarships and provide service for the betterment of our community.

  • Open to all students willing to play or learn the game of chess.

  • The High School Dance Team is a performance-based group that supports school athletics. The team performs at the majority of JHS home basketball games, presenting a combination of NBA/NFL-style and pom choreography. Members rehearse weekly after school.

  • An organization for students in high schools and colleges around the globe. Students compete in different categories and can earn scholarships to college.

  • The Johnston High School Chapter of the National Honor Society is an organization that recognizes students for excellence in Scholarship, Leadership, Character and Service.

  • Earn community service hours by tutoring your fellow students after school (all content areas). Stop by Guidance or email Miss Licciardi to volunteer or for more information.

  • Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation contest. Students memorize, interpret, and recite famous poems, competing for up to $20,000 in cash and prizes.

  • Want to build cool stuff, solve real-world problems, and hang out with friends after school? Join the SMILE Program—a hands-on, high-energy STEM club where you’ll explore science, math, and engineering through fun challenges, experiments, and team projects. You’ll work with college mentors, go on field trips, and even get a taste of what it’s like to be a scientist or engineer.
    No tests. No grades. Just creativity, curiosity, and a whole lot of discovery.

  • Educates, plans and provides information and activites about ALL dangerous decisons that impact society. Provide information about where to seek help and how to be socially involved without dangerous actitivies. Coordinate annual Hoops for Heart fundraiser to bring awareness of dangers/signs of heart disease and provide educatation on immediate assistance with those under heart distress.

  • The Kindness Crew is a club dedicated to spreading positivity and compassion throughout our school and community. We believe that the smallest act of kindness can make a big difference. Our members plan events that bring people together, create small tokens of encouragement, and look for everyday opportunities to brighten someone's day. On November 13th we celebrate World Kindness Day with special activities and little gifts to inspire others. We strive to build a culture of respect, empathy and connection - one act at a time.

  • The Socialites club is related to public speaking. We play games to help students develop their public speaking skills. We plan in-school events.

  • The Tri-M Music Honor Society is a program of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), which focuses on creating future leaders in music education and music advocacy.

  • The purpose of the World Cultures Club is to create awareness, understanding and appreciation of different cultures, its people and diversity. Through various activities such as learning songs and dance, food tasting, playing traditional games and learning crafts, members are encouraged to share their own backgrounds to lead these activities.
