Academics at JHS
Rigorous Academics from Day 1
Starting in 9th grade, all students take college prep or honors level courses. Typical core classes in the 9th grade include:
English 1 (CP or Honors)
World History (CP or Honors)
Algebra 1 or Geometry (CP or Honors)
Physical Science (CP or Honors)
Spanish or Italian (CP or Honors)
Students enrolled in one of our Panther Pathways begin those courses in the 9th grade.
In the 10th grade, students can start to take both AP and Pre-AP courses:
English 10 CP or Pre-AP English 10 Honors
US History or AP United States History
Geometry or Algebra II (CP or Honors)
Biology (CP or Honors)
Spanish II or Italian II (CP or Honors)
Students continue in their Panther Pathway courses and have the opprotunity to take some of our many elective offerings.
As an 11th grader, you’ll take:
English 11 CP or AP English Literature
Civics CP or AP Government and Politics
Algebra 2 (CP or Honors), Precalculus CP or AP Precalculus
Chemistry (CP or Honors)
Spanish III or Italian III (CP or Honors)
Continue with your 3rd Panther Pathways course.
Take electives or one of our many AP or college credit offerings like AP Biology, AP Personal Finance, AP Psychology, and more!
In your final year at JHS, you can take courses like:
English IV CP or AP English Language
Financial Math CP, AP Precalculus, AP Calculus, or one of our other math offerings
Microbiology, AP Biology, or another hands on science course
Your final Panther Pathways course, complete with work based learning and on the job interships.
One of our many advanced language courses through Rhode Island College like Spanish IV.
Some of our most rigorous elective courses like Select Choir, AP 2D Art, or Robotics

Strong Academics
At Johnston High School, we are proud of our robust academic programming. Beginning in grade 9, students have the opportunity to earn college credits while taking high school classes. We offer 19 Advanced Placement courses as well as college courses in partnership with Rhode Island College, Johnson and Wales University, Roger Williams University, The Univerisity of Rhode Island, and The Community College of Rhode Island.
Additionally, students are able to take our honors courses in all core areas starting from their first day in the 9th grade.
With our college credit opportunities, students can earn over a full year’s worth of college credits prior to graduating high school. We offer over 30 courses across all disciplines where students can earn college credit.

Through our partnership with Rhode Island College and their Early Enrollment Program (EEP), we offer the following for credit college classes through RIC, all taught by a teacher with a Master’s Degree in their field:

Spanish V
Italian IV
Italian V
Music Theory
Survey of Music

Juniors and Seniors are eligible to sign up for our EMT Basic course in partnership with Roger Williams University. This class runs for 90 minutes every day for the year, representing 25% of a student’s day.

Juniors and Seniors have the option to take URI WRIT 104 – a college level writing course at the high school. Students who successfully complete this elective course receive 3 college credits from URI.
Students in our Computer Science pathway have the opportunity to take 3 college courses from URI. Each successfully completed course awards the student with 4 college credits from URI.
URI CSC101 – An honors level computer science course.
URI CSC106 – The Joy of Programming
URI CSC211 – Computer Programming.

Students who are in our financial pathway are able to take ACCT 1210 – Financial Accounting as part of their Accouting II course. Students who successfully complete this course will be awarded 3 college credits to JWU.
Early College Access for Seniors
For students who want a head start on college, we offer multiple Early Postsecondary Opportunities with both CCRI and NEIT. Reserved for our highest achieving seniors, these programs allow students to experience their full senior year on a college campus, but with the supports that only Johnston High School can offer. And best of all, the tuition for approved students is fully covered by the school, textbooks included!
CCRI's Running Start Program
Through CCRI's running start program, students take up to 8 courses on CCRI's Lincoln campus in Lincoln, Rhode Island
NEIT's Early College Program
Students enrolled in NEIT's Early College Program take a minimum of 12 credits each trimester to prepare them to go into a degree program at NEIT.
