School Counseling
JHS School Counseling Department
The Johnston Senior High School Counseling Department supports every student’s academic, career, and personal-social development. Counselors work with students and families to plan appropriate courses, monitor progress toward graduation, explore college and career pathways, maintain Individual Learning Plans, and address challenges that may affect student success. Through individualized counseling, classroom and grade-level activities, and the SchooLinks platform, students develop meaningful plans for high school and life after graduation.
School Counselors
Each student is assigned a school counselor who serves as a consistent point of contact throughout high school. Counselors collaborate with students, families, teachers, and other school staff to help students remain on track and make informed decisions about their education and future.

How Our Counselors Support Students

Every Rhode Island student maintains an Individual Learning Plan, or ILP, from middle school through graduation. The ILP helps students connect their interests, strengths, needs, and goals to their educational experience and future plans. At JHS, students use SchooLinks to complete required ILP activities, explore careers and postsecondary pathways, establish goals, and document their progress. Counselors guide students through this process and help them use their ILP to make meaningful academic and postsecondary decisions.

Counselors help students select appropriate courses, understand graduation requirements, monitor academic progress, and develop plans that align with their interests and future goals. The student’s ILP supports this work by connecting course choices and learning opportunities to a broader plan for success.

Counselors help students explore college, technical education, apprenticeships, employment, military service, and other postsecondary pathways. Through SchooLinks and direct counseling support, students research opportunities, prepare applications, request transcripts and recommendations, identify scholarships, and complete important financial-aid and career-planning tasks.

Counselors provide a trusted place for students to discuss concerns, develop problem-solving and self-advocacy skills, navigate challenges, and connect with additional school or community resources. Personal and social goals may also be incorporated into the student’s ILP when appropriate.
