Johnston Senior High School (JSHS) offers an array of exceptional programs that cater to diverse student needs, fostering academic excellence, creativity, and holistic development.

Career and Technical Education programs begin in the 9th grade for students. Each year, all classes run for a full year. Students complete each program with four credits in a CTE program. College credits or industry credentials are available in all CTE programs.

Cosmetology

Students will learn a variety of skills, including hair cutting, styling, and coloring, as well as nail care, skin care, and makeup application.

Biomedical/Medical Careers (PLTW)

Students will learn a foundation in biomedical and health sciences to prepare students for careers in health professions. Option for EMT certification in the senior year.

Electrical

Students receive hands on experience for construction and electrical jobs through the HBI curriculum.

Pre-Engineering (PLTW)

Students learn to tackle hands-on challenges that reflect those in professional engineering environments.

Computer Science (CS4RI)

Students learn computer science, software development, and emerging technologies to prepare students for higher education and careers in computer science.

Construction

Students receive hands on experience for construction and electrical jobs through the HBI curriculum

Finance & Business

Students learn financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and investment management for finance professionals and business owners.

Education

Educator Rising: Students learn about child development and teaching methods and will have hands-on experience in the new Johnston Elementary School.

Hospitality, Tourism, Sports & Event Planning

Students learn about the management, marketing, and operations of restaurants and other food services, lodging, attractions, recreation events, and travel-related services.

Visual/Digital Arts

Students learn foundational design principles, industry-standard software for creating digital content, and various art-making techniques like digital illustration and animation.

Music

Students learn a combination of technical musical skills like theory, performance, and compositions.

Law, Public Safety & Criminal Justice

Students learn about the criminal justice system, law enforcement procedures, and criminal investigation techniques, with hands-on experience

Frequently Asked Questions

Not anymore! This has been true in the past. Starting with the 26-27 school year, students will take full year CTE courses beginning in 9th grade.
Currently our Law and Business pathways are approved by RIDE. We have submitted applications for Electrical, Biomedical, Computer Science, and Pre-Engineering. We will submit the applications for the remaining programs in preparation for the 27-28 school year.
Starting with the 26-27 school year, each program will have a limited number of seats available. Students from Ferri Middle School will get priority in the programs, but once programs are full, students are no longer allowed to join the program.
Of course! Students are able to enroll in both a CTE program and any other classes in the school, including Early Enrollment through RIC, AP courses through College Board, and our URI writing course.
We currently partner with Rhode Island College, University of Rhode Island, Roger Williams University, Johnson & Wales University, and The Community College of Rhode Island.
